If you ride a horse with very smooth gaits do not be surprised to find it hard riding a horse with a big movement. Your muscles are not used to such amplitude and your body will compensate for the luck of coordination.

When you work to change something be careful not to do too much. Otherwise, you create the same problem on another end. It happened to me today when I was working on circles and bending.

I was observing myself and my students and I have noticed an interesting reaction. When a rider expects a certain response from a horse and does not get it, he/she gets frustrated with his/her horse.

When things go well and excitement builds up inside to ask for more, be very careful. It is very easy to override your horse and instead of finishing on the great note, finish with a feeling of argument and disappointment.

If you participate or audit a dressage lesson you will hear about inside leg to outside rein throughout the lesson. You must use your inside leg to send your horse on outside rein and you must create the connection.

I like to spend some time at the walk when I'm warming-up and not just on the free rein. I find it really helpful for quiet not stressful stretching and for creating a connection with my horse for the work to come.

I have been working on half-passes today and I have realized that a heavy inside rein doesn't necessarily mean falling inside. A horse can as easily fall on outside shoulder during half-pass and feel heavy on the inside rein.

I have found an interesting exersise for my horse, who has a flat canter. I know that canter is very hard to improve. However, it is fun to try :)
